This project involves the transformation of a traditional stone barn located in the rural landscape of the Dordogne. Conceived as an extension of the existing house, the intervention seeks to preserve the raw character and material presence of the original structure while adapting it to contemporary living.
The project explores the architectural potential of old stone buildings, combining careful restoration with restrained contemporary interventions. Particular attention was given to the relationship between existing and new spaces, creating fluid connections between the historic structure and the extension.
Designed as a warm and durable family home, the project introduces generous living areas, additional bedrooms, a workshop, and quiet spaces dedicated to reading and work. The spatial organization prioritizes natural light, continuity of movement, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
The rehabilitation strategy relies on local and bio-based materials, including timber construction, hemp-lime insulation, and the reuse of existing stone elements. These choices reinforce the thermal inertia of the building while preserving the authentic atmosphere of the original barn.
Beyond the renovation itself, the project reflects an interest in the sustainable transformation of vernacular architecture — where existing structures, local craftsmanship, and contemporary comfort are brought together within a coherent architectural approach.
